Some of the most powerful novels and memoirs are composed of tiny pieces. We’ll meet one weekend a month for three months to write short vignettes with the goal of combining them into longer works.
Each month, we’ll read and analyze short, stand-alone chapters of only a few pages and written from a recurring first-person narrative perspective. We’ll use these examples to discuss the craft of writing, with each weekend focusing on a different aspect of craft. In each session, you’ll respond to 4-6 prompts inspired by our readings to generate vignettes, which you’ll share with your classmates for feedback and support. By the end of the 3-month series, you may have up to 18 vignettes—which is the start of your own book!
Meetings will be on the third Saturday and Sunday of the month in August, September, and October from 10 am – 1 pm. In preparation for each meeting, you’ll read one short novel or memoir composed of vignettes.
Sign up for all three as a package to receive a discount, or sign up to drop-in to an individual weekend session. We are currently only accepting registrations for the package. We will open drop-in registration for individual weekends starting July 15.
Complimentary coffee, tea, and light refreshments (pastries) will be provided at all sessions.
Each session may be led by either or both instructors.

This class will take place in person in Durham. Night School requires that students refrain from attending in-person classes when sick. For more on our class policies, see our FAQ. Instructors will also follow this policy. If your instructor is sick, class may be moved to online for a session or rescheduled to the week following the final scheduled session at the instructor’s discretion.
