No Fear Shakespeare: Much Ado About Nothing [Durham, NC]
No Fear Shakespeare is in-person only. There is no virtual component. Participants must be age 21+
Community Table Read, Saturday March 28th, 5-8pm: $25 (includes one beer/wine/NA drink ticket)
Much Ado Scenework Intensive: Saturday March 21st & Sunday March 22nd, 2-5pm: $140
Instructor: Juliana Finch
Two people who are perfect for each other but refuse to admit it are set up by a whole cast of their friends during a destination wedding weekend. If this sounds like a recent romantic comedy rather than a 400-year-old play, you might be surprised by how contemporary Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing feels to modern readers. Whip-smart Beatrice and Benedick (eventually) release their cynical views on love while engaging in a "merry war" of wits with one another. As Benedick says, " "Thou and I are too wise to woo peaceably."
Join instructor Juliana Finch for a fun, low-stakes community table read of Much Ado About Nothing on March 28th. We’ll have a brief intro discussion with some tips from the theater, then grab drinks and divvy up the roles to read out loud together. After each act, we’ll do a quick breakdown of the scenes so everyone can follow along.
No acting experience or Shakespearean expertise necessary. Reading aloud is optional – absolutely no pressure if you just want to listen and enjoy!
Here’s a free copy of the script we’ll be using, but feel free to bring along your favorite edition: http://shakespeare.mit.edu/much_ado/index.html
NEW for this edition of No Fear Shakespeare: Add on a two-day scenework intensive!
If you've found yourself with a bit of the theater bug and want to dive more deeply into how to perform Shakespeare's work, sign up for the Much Ado Scenework Intensive as a companion course to this event. Saturday and Sunday, March 21st and 22nd, we'll spend the afternoon in acting exercises and text analysis using specific scenes from the play. Learn how actors approach the script to unlock the characters and emotions in Shakespeare's work to make his words come alive for contemporary audiences. Participants will have the opportunity to perform the scenes we work on staged-reading style (i.e. you won't have to memorize them!) during the March 28th event.
