What is a general strike, and what can it do? Historically, the strike has been a key tool of labor movements. Workplace strikes stop production and allow workers to demand changes to their work conditions. The general strike is bigger! General strikes are not isolated to a single work site, and they expand the very concept of the worker. New visions of the strike not only unify workers across industries, but they also understand labor as happening outside the workplace, and include housework, care work, and emotional labor. This allows strikers to make demands that are not just about their individual workplaces, but about politics more broadly.
General strikes are already happening. On September 22, workers across sectors mobilized in Italy to demand direct governmental action to the conflict in Gaza. Currently, there is a call for a worldwide mass general strike in 2028. How has the mass strike been an important tool in the past, and how can it be mobilized in the future? Join us for a one night discussion of the general strike in theory and praxis!
Participants are encouraged to read the following in advance:
Kim Kelly, “Everything You Need to Know about General Strikes,” Teen Vogue, January 24, 2019. [~5 pages]
Arruzza, Bhattacharya, Fraser, “Thesis 1: A New Feminist Wave Is Reinventing the Strike,” in Feminism for the 99 (2017), pgs, 6-10. [~5 pages]
