NSB Film School: Domesticity in Cinema [Durham, NC]

Domestic spaces are haunted through time and beyond their walls. Films about the places we live are, in a sense, ghost stories. This three-week course examines domesticity as a recurring haunting, rather than as a settled place of belonging. We will study three films – La Ciénega (Lucrecia Martel, 2001), Colossal Youth (Pedro Costa, 2006), and Daughters of the Dust (Julie Dash, 1991) – to explore how intergenerational spaces repeat histories, disrupt time, and create rituals.
Our conversations will center the interplay between the domicile as a site of labor, a space that creates (gender) roles, and a place to dwell. In this context, what does it mean to be at home? The worlds of these films roam between the sweltering stagnation of the Argentine bourgeois in Salta, the uncanny dislocations of time within an ever-changing home in Lisbon’s Fontainhas neighborhood, and the moored weight among a Gullah Geechee family confronting the choice of whether to leave their Ibo Landing home for the North in a post-Reconstruction 1902. These worlds emerge in the tension of this interplay; a liminal space where people are continually negotiating history, memory, and corporeal life.
This film class will draw on theories of domesticity and dwelling. Accompanying readings, including works by W.E.B. De Bois, Martin Heidegger, and Miguel Cardina, will be offered to guide discussion, though they are not required.

SLIDING SCALE TUITION
Full tuition is the cost per-student of running the class. If you choose a tier below full tuition, you are receiving a discount. If you choose to make a donation in addition to full tuition, you are helping to cover the cost for students who are not able to pay the full amount.
The mid-level tier is a discounted rate for people whose household income is at or above living wage but who have limited discretionary income.
The low-level tier and the full-scholarship tier are for people whose household income is below living wage or who need extra assistance to meet their needs.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Through our fundraising efforts, we are able to offer three full scholarships per class. The full-scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering. Each student may only take one full-scholarship class at a time. Because our scholarship funding is limited, if a student selects multiple overlapping classes at the full-scholarship level, they will be disenrolled from all classes.
All sliding-scale and scholarship needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.
