What happens in spaces of confinement, which are usually outside our view? Over the course of three weeks, we’ll examine films that bring the experience of confinement to light.

To be confined is to be outcast from society at large. Confinement is often imposed, inhumane, stigmatizing and oppressive.  Yet confinement can also be chosen: a haven from the world, a space where the mind roams and where community forms.

Together we’ll examine how experiences of confinement are shaped and intensified by illness, marginalization, and class through three diverse yet interrelated films: The House is Black (1962), Grey Gardens (1975), and Parasite (2019). In The House is Black, Iranian poet and documentary filmmaker Forugh Farrokhzad reflects on life in a leper colony, surprisingly speaking of hope and the power of imagining. In Grey Gardens, Albert and David Maysles follow the eccentric lives of Big and Little Edie Beale–close relatives of Jackie Kennedy–after they are nearly evicted from their dilapidated estate. And, in Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, the decaying home of the Kim family becomes emblematic of class inequality and highlights the need to escape by any means necessary.

Through close readings of these films – which we will view together – we’ll explore critical, poetic, and haunting reflections of the human experience, framed through a cinema of confinement.

SLIDING SCALE TUITION

Full tuition is the cost per-student of running the class. If you choose a tier below full tuition, you are receiving a discount. If you choose to make a donation in addition to full tuition, you are helping to cover the cost for students who are not able to pay the full amount.

The mid-level tier is a discounted rate for people whose household income is at or above living wage but who have limited discretionary income.

The low-level tier and the full-scholarship tier are for people whose household income is below living wage or who need extra assistance to meet their needs.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Through our fundraising efforts, we are able to offer three full scholarships per class. The full-scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering. Each student may only take one full-scholarship class at a time. Because our scholarship funding is limited, if a student selects multiple overlapping classes at the full-scholarship level, they will be disenrolled from all classes.

All sliding-scale and scholarship needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.

Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans, refund policy, and sick and inclement weather policy.
