Decoding Culture: Bullshit: Social Media and (Dis)trust [Durham, NC]

$25.00

In-person only. There is no virtual component. Participants must be age 21+

$25—includes one drink ticket good for beer/wine/NA options

Why is it getting harder and harder to trust what we see online? Spoiler: it's not just AI! This seminar will delve into the subfield of bullshitology (yes, that's a real thing!) and elaborate on concepts such as epistemic vigilance and epistemic justice. How do we know what we know? What political forces are behind this? How is social media intentionally designed to cultivate bullshit and bullshit artists? This seminar will give you a more robust and nuanced understanding of why the digital world is becoming murkier and more untrustworthy. You’ll walk away with more language and tools to resist the dark forces of the Death Sta-- I mean, Big Tech.

No advanced preparation required.

The Decoding Culture series offers short, low- or no-prep classes designed to increase cultural literacy and allow you to analyze the world we live in. Each session covers a key concept that will help you decipher cultural phenomena, and offers you a chance to meet and discuss with others who are concerned about the contemporary landscape and the possibilities for our future.
