NSB Film School: Climate Crisis in Cinema [Durham, NC]

In today’s world, the climate crisis is top of mind — whether in daily chitchat about the weather amid rising temperatures, in the aftermath of natural disaster right in our backyards, or through political rhetoric on TV that treats science as analogous to personal opinion rather than fact. Filmmakers have long explored a unique range of creative liberties when tackling climate change. Early work on this topic spans everything from sci-fi to documentary. Climate change is a futuristic idea for some, such as Waterworld (1995), Interstellar (2014), and Snowpiercer (2013).,. For others, like Al Gore’s 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth, it’s an inevitable effect of capitalism and corporate greed.
In this mini course we’ll explore films that take a more personal and intimate approach to telling the stories of climate crisis. In three weeks we’ll view three films: Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012, fantasy-drama), King Coal (2023, hybrid documentary), and The End We Start From (2024, drama). We’ll start each class with a brief rundown of themes and follow each screening with a discussion. There may be additional reading or supplemental clips provided for this class, which are optional.

This class will take place in person at Night School Bar in Durham. Night School requires that students refrain from attending in-person classes when sick. For more on our class policies, see our FAQ. Instructors will also follow this policy. If your instructor is sick, class may be moved to online for a session or rescheduled to the week following the final scheduled session at the instructor’s discretion.
Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage. We ask that people who make above the living wage threshold for their area strongly consider choosing the full- or mid-level tuition tier in order to support our own living wage program. For Durham, NC, where we are located, the living wage threshold is $49,000 for an individual. All sliding-scale needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.
