French New Wave pioneer Agnès Varda has been described as an experimental filmmaker, a hybrid documenteur, and a feminist icon. With a fluidity of form and a commitment to curiosity, she shaped a filmmaking style all her own. Varda famously accepted all and none of the boxes that she was put into. She once said “If we opened people up, we’d find landscapes.” At 89, she became the oldest Oscar nominee after a long career and breadth of creative work that inspired hundreds of filmmakers across the globe.
In this three-week course, we'll examine the central theme of Varda's work, which she described as the difference between our images and lived experience: “It seems to me that this dialectic, this ambiguity, this contradiction of the clichés of our mental life and the images of lived life is really the subject of all my films.”
We’ll also explore a character study of Varda herself through three of her most iconic films: Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962), Vagabond (1985), and The Beaches of Agnès (2008). These films also show us how memory and time collapse into other narrative devices — autobiographical portrait, a bricolage of mixed media, acting with non-actors — that give Varda’s filmmaking style both whimsy and depth.

If the scholarship tier you need is sold out please email us directly, and we will add you to a waitlist and notify you if additional scholarships become available. Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans and refund policy.
