Instructor: Lindsey Andrews | Daily | June 29-July 5 | ONLINE

Our memories of experiences are often so ephemeral and dreamlike that they lend themselves to being written about through lyrical prose and expansive structure. Maybe you use a recipe, an album, a multiple choice test, or a playlist as the structure to explore writing your memories. In this weeklong intensive writing class, we’ll draft, workshop and revise towards a short book of lyric memoirs that we’ll print and produce with our own hands. In class, we’ll read examples of braided essays and lyric memoirs, write our own series in response to generative prompts, and engage in craft lessons to learn how to manipulate time, incorporate research, and write evocative description and dialogue. By the end of the week you will have a fully revised short book of your own lyric memoirs. You’ll build a rigorous writing practice, flow through drafting, workshopping, and revising, and engage a dedicated collective of readers to manifest your own lyric memoirs.

Participants are asked to read Rebecca Solnit’s essay, “The Blue of Distance,” in advance. No other reading/preparation is required outside of listed meeting times. Optional readings will be provided.

Maximum 10 participants.

SCHEDULE:

Sunday June 29: 1:00-3:00 PM ET

Monday June 30-Thursday July 3: 7:00-9:00 PM ET

Friday July 4: Optional/Self-Directed Revision Time

Saturday July 5: 1:00-3:00 PM ET, class reading / presentation

Monday-Thursday: optional half-hour lunchtime zoom accountability log-in and writing time, 12:00-12:30 PM ET

**Enrolled students: please plan to attend Sunday, Monday evening, Wednesday evening, and Saturday synchronously. You are also encouraged to attend Tuesday and Thursday synchronously, but you can do writing and revisions asynchronously those nights if necessary.

**Asynchronous students will receive access to published essays, prompts, and recordings of discussions of published works, but will not have an opportunity to read the work of other participants, observe other students’ workshops, or get feedback on their work from other students or the instructor.

Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage. We ask that people who make above the living wage threshold for their area strongly consider choosing the middle or full tuition tiers in order to support our own living wage program. For Durham, NC, where we are located, the living wage threshold is $49,000 for an individual. All scholarship needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.

Scholarships: We are able to offer two 70% scholarships on the lowest tuition level (tuition payment will be: $75) for this workshop. Please email nightschoolbar@gmail.com with the subject line “Lyric Memoir ONLINE Scholarship Request” and include your name and a few sentences about your interest in and goals for the class. Due to anticipated interest, we are not offering these scholarships on a first-come-first-serve basis, but instead are offering them by request if possible. We will make scholarship offers at least two weeks before the class begins. The option will be removed from the website once all scholarships have been offered. You do not need to explain why you need a scholarship; we trust that if you are asking for one, you need one!
