Popular books, elevated discussions: Caro Claire Burke’s Yesteryear and the tradwife phenomenon — Friday | July 3 | 6:30-8:00 PM | 719 N Mangum St, Durham, NC

We know you've read it, and you're dying to talk about it. Join us for a one-night discussion of Caro Claire Burke’s viral novel, Yesteryear, and the cultural phenomenon of tradwives. You’ve clicked on at least one @ballerinafarm video or maybe you’ve even gone down a reddit r/tradwives rabbit hole. The phenomenon is everywhere on social media. What are tradwives? Why has the movement emerged in this particular moment? And how should we understand the aesthetics and politics of it?

Top Shelf Book Club offers an elevated take on the traditional book club by bringing in critical tools and expert analyses to drive the discussion. You are encouraged to read Caro Claire Burke’s novel in advance. In the meeting, we’ll share insights from expert cultural analysts including Tressie McMillan Cottom, Sarah Banet Weiser, and Sara Reinis to ground our evaluation of the novel and open up the conversation to larger cultural and political questions about whiteness, MAGA, social reproduction, and manufactured nostalgia. Even if you aren’t able to read the book in advance, you can check out a review and come chat!

This is an opportunity to meet like-minded folks and dish about a popular novel and culture phenomenon with new friends. Night School will provide academic insights and guided questions to help you go deeper in understanding our present moment.
