Instructor: Lindsey Andrews | 3-weeks | Fridays Oct 17-31 | 7:00-9:00 PM ET | 719 N Mangum St, Durham, NC

A mad scientist playing god and unleashing monstrous consequences on humankind is one of the most enduring tropes of science fiction. And it all began in 1818 with Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, which is widely considered the first novel to question modern science, and also the first work of modern science fiction. Over the course of three weeks, we’ll read about a strange creature brought to life through electromagnetism and amalgamated body parts who reads Milton, learns languages, and just wants to be loved while wreaking havoc all over the Swiss Alps. And we’ll discuss the questions the novel raises about the ethical responsibilities of science and scientists, as well as its central metaphor of monstrous experimentation. We'll ask: Is this novel a cautionary tale about creating life? An exploration of identity and otherness? A feminist critique of maternity under patriarchy? In the final session–on Halloween!--we’ll also discuss the 1931 film and the role of adaptation in representing and responding to changes in cultural contexts over time. An optional film screening will take place on Thursday October 30.
