This week-long summer intensive introduces students to the worlds of filmmaking and film editing. No prior experience is necessary—only curiosity and openness! You’ll gain technical know-how by approaching film and filmmaking as extensions of things we already experience: time, image, and thought. We’ll use readily available technology: our phones as cameras and the free editing software DaVinci Resolve. And we’ll spend the week making a short film together, which we’ll screen as a class during the very last session.
In this course we’ll primarily focus on two simple ideas: how to choose what to leave in, and how to choose what to take out. Through hands-on shooting, collaborative editing, and critical reflection, we’ll consider how our editing decisions shape emotion, meaning, and responsibility. Watching excerpts from Reassemblage (Trinh T. Minh-ha) and Goodbye, Dragon Inn (Tsai Ming-liang) will help illustrate crucial elements of editing, including timing, rhythm, and meaning-making.
While no prior experience is necessary, there are a few course requirements: access to a smart phone for recording, a computer for editing (a laptop is preferred so that you can work both inside and outside of class time), and willingness to download and install free editing software onto your computer. A portable hard drive is also recommended.

SLIDING SCALE TUITION
Full tuition is the cost per-student of running the class. If you choose a tier below full tuition, you are receiving a discount. If you choose to make a donation in addition to full tuition, you are helping to cover the cost for students who are not able to pay the full amount.
The mid-level tier is a discounted rate for people whose household income is at or above living wage but who have limited discretionary income.
The low-level tier and the full-scholarship tier are for people whose household income is below living wage or who need extra assistance to meet their needs.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Through our fundraising efforts, we are able to offer three full scholarships per class. The full-scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering. Each student may only take one full-scholarship class at a time. Because our scholarship funding is limited, if a student selects multiple overlapping classes at the full-scholarship level, they will be disenrolled from all classes.
All sliding-scale and scholarship needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.
Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans, refund policy, and sick and inclement weather policy.
