**This event is in-person only. There is no virtual component. Participants must be age 21+
This event is FREE for anyone who would like to participate. You can also choose to donate $10 or $25 to help cover costs and keep classes accessible to all.
This class is the first of five in our Summer Care Series.
Instructor: Nicole Berland | Friday June 20 | 6-9 PM | Durham, NC
Taika Waititi’s 2016 film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, is a love song to tenderness that finds the core of its melody in the relationship between an irreverent boy and his taciturn foster father as they elude an increasingly unhinged Child Welfare Services in the New Zealand bush. The session will begin with a short introduction, after which we will screen and then discuss the film. We’ll talk about gendered care, stewardship, foster care, and haikus. You’ll love it, we promise.
*No advanced preparation required.
Care Summer School description:
What is the relationship of study and care? At Night School Bar, we don’t want one without the other: collaborative study is how we care for ourselves and one another. And don’t we all learn best when we feel cared for?
Many of our instructors write and teach about “care,” but each from a different angle. That’s why we’ve created a series of 5 class sessions -- each taught by a different instructor and on a different topic, but “care” is the common thread. You’re welcome to participate in 1 or all 5.
Each of the 5 class sessions are FREE. We invite you to make a one-time donation to Night School Bar if you are able, available in the drop-down menu. We are 100% community funded by lifelong learners just like you and your donation helps us keep our classes accessible.
Other classes in the series will become available for sign up over the next few weeks. Topics include: Disability Justice, Caring through Conflict, Food as Community and Care, and Caring for Queer Ecologies.
