Instructor: Lindsey Andrews | 4-weeks | Sundays | September 21-October 12 | 7:00-9:00 PM | 719 N Mangum St, Durham, NC

The devil, a vampire, and a hitman walk into a bar. . . sure, it sounds like the set up to a great joke, and it’s also what will happen as we read Bulgakov’s oft-censored masterpiece at Night School Bar! Over the course of three weeks, we’ll read this brilliant novel and discuss the contexts of the Soviet Union in the mid-twentieth century. Moving back and forth between a retelling of the first-century story of Pontius Pilatus and the misadventures of a 20th century conman and his coterie, this surreal novel explores religious meaning-making, the emergence of bureaucracy, the machinations of the political theater, and the secrets of rising authoritarianism in Soviet Russia. Together, we’ll ask what exactly this dark political satire had to say in its own moment and today.

From the publisher:

Nothing in the whole of literature compares with The Master and Margarita. One spring afternoon, the Devil, trailing fire and chaos in his wake, weaves himself out of the shadows and into Moscow. Mikhail Bulgakov’s fantastical, funny, and devastating satire of Soviet life combines two distinct yet interwoven parts, one set in contemporary Moscow, the other in ancient Jerusalem, each brimming with historical, imaginary, frightful, and wonderful characters. Written during the darkest days of Stalin’s reign, and finally published in 1966 and 1967, The Master and Margarita became a literary phenomenon, signaling artistic and spiritual freedom for Russians everywhere.

Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage. We ask that people who make above the living wage threshold for their area strongly consider choosing the full-tuition or mid-level tuition tier in order to support our own living wage program. For Durham, NC, where we are located, the living wage threshold is $49,000 for an individual. All scholarship needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.

Scholarships: We are currently able to offer three full scholarships per class. Our full scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering, limited to one per student per month. Because our scholarship funding is limited, selecting multiple full scholarships in a single month will result in disenrollment from all classes. If the scholarship tier you need is sold out please email us directly, and we will add you to a waitlist and notify you if additional scholarships become available. Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans and refund policy.
