Instructor: Lindsey Andrews | 5-Weeks | Fridays August 22-September 19 | 7:00-9:00 PM | In-Person, 719 N Mangum St, Durham, NC

A scientific taxonomy that divides all animals into those that are embalmed, those that are trained, and those that from a long way off look like flies shows the arbitrary nature of any act of categorization. A cockroach murder contains the secrets of Pompeii and Leibniz. An answer to what came first: a chicken is an egg’s disguise. The stories of Jorge Luis Borges and Clarice Lispector—two of South America’s most inventive writers—defy genre and experiment with philosophical conceits that span the outrageous and the mundane. And their fiction has inspired other philosophers to deconstruct the nature of science, language, psychology, and existence itself. Over the course of five weeks, we’ll read short stories by both Borges and Lispector, as well as some of the works of the philosophers they’ve influenced—such as Michel Foucault and Heléne Cixous. We’ll analyze stories and write our own philosophically-tinged short creative works.

This workshop is for anyone who has big questions about the world and likes strange and thought-provoking short fiction. No writing experience—fiction- or philosophy-wise—required. Just bring your love of language, your curiosity about the world, and a notebook! Readings will be provided in English, but speakers of Spanish or Portuguese are invited to read them in the original.

Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage. We ask that people who make above the living wage threshold for their area strongly consider choosing the full-tuition or mid-level tuition tier in order to support our own living wage program. For Durham, NC, where we are located, the living wage threshold is $49,000 for an individual. All scholarship needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.

Scholarships: We are currently able to offer three full scholarships per class. Our full scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering, limited to one per student per month. Because our scholarship funding is limited, selecting multiple full scholarships in a single month will result in disenrollment from all classes. If the scholarship tier you need is sold out please email us directly, and we will add you to a waitlist and notify you if additional scholarships become available. Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans and refund policy.
